The only list
This is the only list of prisoners who died at Andersonville. It was made by a Union prisoner and smuggled out of the camp. The list made by the Confederates was inaccurate and incomplete. Dorrance was eventually court martially after refusing to turn the list over to the government. Clara Barton, who had worked with him when he returned to Andersonville to identify the graves, brought his plight to the President's attention. Torrance had a very successful life and died at the age of 65. The original list was kept at his home in San Francisco and was lost in the !906 earthquake.
